A drop in the quality of teaching is affecting students’ learning, especially in the subjects of science and mathematics, and needs a holistic approach to address it. David Rande, a teacher trainer at the Melanesian Nazarene Teachers College in Jiwaka Province, mentioned this during a science and mathematics expo held at Orei Primary School, in Ialibu district, Southern Highlands Province last week. He said the drop is reflected in the average performances of students who come out of the education system in the country. Mr Rande said teaching and learning should be more practical so that there is motivation in young children to explore more. Having spent the last five weeks with his trainee teachers (out on their practicum), he said the interest in the science and mathematics program have dropped as a result of their early childhood trainings. He said learning has dropped at all levels contributing to poor examination results and students performances. “Teaching and learning is a holistic approach that one needs to show interest at the early stage. Teachers are using the textsbooks to teach without the practical experiments and modelling. “There is no creativity, while teachers need to improvise teaching materials. The children in the classroom are fed and expected to absorb what is narrated and not leading students to be more practical. They become idle rather than being active participants. They should be given the opportunity to involve in their own learning by experimenting, investigating, modelling, explaining, and reasoning to understand the concepts of certain topics taught,” he said. The expo, an initiative of the teacher trainees was aimed at making learning and teaching more interesting with the use of materials (practical lesson) to depart the information to the students. “The aim of this expo was to motivate and boost teaching and learning when it comes to science and mathematics. It was aimed to allow teachers to use varieties of teaching strategies to impart the science and mathematics skills and knowledge to the children. “Having realised the need, the group initiated the expo to displayed how teaching and learning should take place, an effective teaching and learning approach. “With a clear sense of what needs to be implemented, the teachers very much needed to structure their lessons around the student’s needs,” he said. It is indeed a sad fact that the standard of education has dramatically decreased in my opinion for the following reasons :
