Education Minister Nick Kuman is urging provincial governments to ensure teachers are put back on the payroll. He was responding to Nuku MP Joe Sungi in Parliament yesterday on the issue of more than 10,000 teachers being put off the payroll. Sungi asked Kuman if he was aware of the ongoing teachers’ issue as 400 teachers from West Sepik had also been affected. “Will the department (of Education) put in a system to ensure the problem of teachers going off payroll doesn’t get repeated every year,” Sungi said. Kuman said: “I am aware, close to about 10,000 teachers are off the payroll.
“The onus is on the teachers. When you get a posting, you must make sure the resumption is done before the school starts. “The problem continues to exist because when the teachers are late to put in their resumptions. “Problem is also with those at the province. “The provincial education office and agencies in charge of teachers and the education system in the province are slack. “I admit that there are serious problems with regards to teachers being put off the payroll and we know that we all have a responsibility. “A lot of teachers are still on the streets, simply because they are not given posting or politics is involved. We must do away with these. “We need teachers to be in the classroom to ensure children are educated. “We’ve only got 55,000-56,000 teachers in the country. We need at least 70,000 teachers to be in the classrooms.” Madang MP Bryan Kramer asked Kuman if some of the 10,000 teachers were back on the payroll. Kuman said he could not give the exact details or figures which was kept by the Education Department. “I’m not privy to those information. Unless im briefed by province or district I will let you know,” he said.
