THE education sector has been allocated K1.31 billion, which is 9.2 per cent of the 2016 Budget expenditure.
Next year, the Department of Education will receive K953.4 million, which is 72.1 per cent of the education sector budget to further the current Government’s commitment to education. This includes a capital component of K266.3 million to fund education projects. The subsidies paid to support the tuition fee-free policy is a major but essential cost of K602 million – a slight drop of K3 million from 2015. Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch said the tuition fee free education funds were paid through the Department of Finance to be dispersed to schools. Pruaitch said next year, there would be 10,318 schools in the country including elementary, primary, high, vocational, flexible open distance education, national high, permitted schools and special education schools. A total of K30.2 million will be provided for primary schools operations, plus K2.4 million for curriculum development materials which include the procurement of text and resource books for teachers in elementary and primary schools. In 2016, K20.2 million is appropriated for technical schools operations, K19.6 million for secondary school equipment and K16.1 million for national examinations for Grades 8, 10 and 12. Higher education received K137.2 million.
