Two senior officers from the Department of Education officially exited after serving the system for 39 and 32 years respectively. The officers are Messrs Godfey Yerua, from Jiwaka Province, and Joseph Logha from West New Britain Province. Both spent three quarters of their lives with the Department, starting their career as teachers and working their way up to senior positions before their exit on Thursday, October 20. Godfrey Yerua was the deputy secretary for TVET & UNESCO while Joseph Logha was the first assistant secretary for the Policy and Research Wing. In a statement, the Department said: “During their tenures, they were the integral part of the changes realised at different levels of the National Education System.” Yerua, during the farewell gathering, said his choice to be a teacher was never a mistake. The career has helped him learn and accumulate immense knowledge, skills and values in his last 39 years when he served the Department of Education. Since 1977, he worked under three acting secretaries and 8 permanent secretaries. “During my 39-year journey with the Department, it took me just seven steps to be where I am and it has been a privilege,” Yerua said. Logha, on the other hand, was the master craftsman who drove the development of strategic plans and their implementation in the Department. Under his leadership, he helped develop relevant education policies, research and data analysis and planned strategies to meet the changing demands of the National Education System. A few colleagues spoke highly of them and wished them success in their future endeavours. The recently confirmed Secretary, Dr. Uke Kombra, thanked them for their contributions to the Department, the school children and the people of Papua New Guinea. On behalf of the Education Department, Dr Kombra wished them a new successful life. (Godfrey Yerua, former deputy secretary, and Joseph Logha, former first assistant secretary.)
