Every society want and expects the best from its citizens and that is to be educated so they can contribute meaningfully to the society’s development. This was the message from the Acting Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG), Elizabeth Gania. Ms Gania was speaking at the recent International Training Institute (ITI) graduation held last Friday. Ms Gania said that such was the reason behind the Government’s choice for the free Tuition Fee Education policy (TFF), adding that although the policy costs a lot of public money, its benefits are far reaching and it has set a foundation for the future. She added that the transformation of the PNG Economy since the start of the US$19 billion PNG Natural and Liquefied Gas (LNG) project in 2010, the journey has been nothing short of amazing and our growth as a country continues but currently at a slower pace. “Our economy is heavily dependent on the extractive sector, mainly mining, petroleum and gas. We need to move away from this these extractive industries and develop the renewal sectors such as agriculture and tourism”, she said. Ms Gania said that this is because these areas are where the bulk of the population are and it is where we can achieve sustainable development over time but to do that, she added that the country needs a skilled and educated workforce. She added that private Institutions such as ITI complement the demand of high quality education faced by Government Institutions and with the expansion of ITI to most parts of the country is praiseworthy. Ms Gania acknowledged the 295 graduates, the Institutions staff as well as ITI’s board and management for their vision and focus. Of the total, 140 graduated with certificates and 95 with Diploma’s from both the school of business and Information Technology. The course with the highest number of graduates was the Diploma in Accounting with a total of seventy –six students. The graduation was held at the Kaugere, Foursquare Church. Post Courier
