THE East New Britain assembly has approved the establishment of a new secondary school for Kokopo, in the Bitapaka local level government of Taubar area.
The school, which will be called the Bitapaka Secondary School, will be located at the Makurapau plantation in Bitapaka local level government and will start taking in students in 2016. President for Bitapaka LLG and chairman of education Cosmas Bauk said for a very long time, children in the area had gone to distant schools in the province to pursue further education. He said the day students from the area who attend Vunapope Our Lady of Sacred Heart Secondary School and Kokopo Secondary School faced serious transport difficulties, resulting to irregular attendance and student absenteeism. Bauk said the new school would put that challenge to an end by bringing secondary education right to the doors of the people at home He added that many existing schools in East New Britain are restricted from expansions because of lack of land, however the new school with an adequate 12 hectares of land had room for future expansion. “It is understood that the LLG with a total of eight primary schools produce an average of 300 Grade 9 student enrollments annually,” he said. Bauk said this was a good number to feed the new secondary school. The Kokopo Joint District Planning and Budget Priorities Committee has already committed an initial K500,000 to kick start the project as an early establishment grant. Comments are closed.
