Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea has marked another milestone in its development with the official opening of new student infrastructure at its Wewak campus. The university commissioned the projects on April 21, bringing into use a modernised Nursing Simulation Laboratory and a newly built Male Student Recreational Hall. Funded by the National Government through the Public Investment Program, the projects highlight ongoing support for higher education institutions like Divine Word University.
National Planning and Monitoring Secretary Koney Samuel said the university remains an important partner in delivering the government’s vision for education and youth development. He said learning environments must go beyond theory, encouraging collaboration, innovation and practical experience among students. Mr Samuel also urged students to care for the new equipment, saying it would benefit future generations if properly maintained. Governor Allan Bird commended Divine Word University’s continued investment in infrastructure, saying the country needs more trained health workers and institutions like DWU are helping to meet that demand. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the university’s role in serving both East and West Sepik provinces. DWU President Fr Philip Gibbs said the new facilities are designed to enhance both academic learning and student wellbeing, stating, “these facilities reflect DWU’s vision to be a foremost university in the Catholic tradition, promoting true integral human development in Papua New Guinea and beyond.” headlines
