The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) has continued rolling out key initiatives across Papua New Guinea aimed at improving higher education, technical training, and inclusive learning environments. In Madang, DHERST officials visited Divine Word University on May 18 to inspect a newly completed staff accommodation facility consisting of six housing units. Officials said the project is expected to improve staff welfare and support staff retention at the institution. Meanwhile in Lae, data collected from more than 200 staff and students who took part in a Gender Smart Safety Audit survey at National Polytechnic Institute of Papua New Guinea is currently being consolidated. The findings are expected to help improve safety and inclusiveness within training environments.
The safety audit activity was supported through the PNG–Australia Partnership, Strongim Wok Long TVET program, and the PNG Business Coalition for Women. In Goroka, Goroka Technical College held discussions on DHERST’s newly introduced Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Policy. The meeting focused on strengthening inclusive policies and institutional practices through the use of the DHERST GESI Toolkit. The GESI policy was developed by the Project Management Unit of the Papua New Guinea Improved TVET for Employment Project (iTVET4E). In Port Moresby, DHERST held an introductory meeting on May 20 with the Technical Support Team from TAFE Queensland International as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the agriculture and construction sectors. The Technical Support Team is assisting with the Improved TVET for Employment Project and broader TVET reform activities in Papua New Guinea. During the meeting, the DHERST Secretary highlighted the importance of stronger coordination between development partners and the department to improve training outcomes and better address industry demands.
