The delay by the government in dishing out the tuition free fees (TFF) funding is affecting schools in the country, a teacher has said. Vui Noka, principal of Hoodpoint High School in Rigo Coast, Central, says the delay have caused schools nationwide to dig deep into their pockets to meet the needs and demands of their schools. The TFF funding is the O’Neil government’s policy that was adapted in 2012. The policy was transferred to the Department of Education to implement. However the policy is seen not very effective when the Education Department is struggling to implement the policy.
Many schools like the Hoodpoint High School are raising their frustrations and concern on when the TFF funding would be released into their school accounts. “It’s almost eight months and yet we haven’t received any funding from the National Department of Education,” Mr Noka said. Mr Noka said his school is a newly established one and is facing difficulty in meeting its needs. “With the delay of the TFF funding, we’ve considered doing fundraisings to build two extra houses to accommodate our teachers,” Mr Noka revealed this at the school’s fundraiser in Port Moresby last Friday. He said the idea of hosting the fundraising was an initiative taken by the school administration and the board of management headed by Gerea Kila. He said they cannot wait on for the government’s TFF funding. “This initiative we have taken is an indication that we are thinking out of the box to meet the school’s demand,” he said. He challenged other schools in the country to come up with initiates to raise funds instead of waiting for the prolonged TFF monies.
