A COMPANY has sponsored a school debate in Lae to educate young people about negative environment impacts.
Steamships Trading Company hosted the debate involving students from Lae Secondary School and Busu Secondary School. Students from Bumayong Secondary and Bugandi Secondary could not participate because of a fight. The debate was judged by the company’s health safety, security and environment coordinator Titus Kuman, PNG Forest Research Institute’s Dr Cossey Yosey and education officer Alfred Tobem. Public relations officer Wanita Wakus said the idea was to get students to conduct research on big industrial companies and their impact on the environment, and present their findings in a debate. “We give themes to participating students in each school, they do research and present these findings during debates,” Wakus said. “Every year, we celebrate World Environment Day on certain themes. Now we want the students to actually research these different themes.” The company has been running an essay competition as part of its education programme. Participating students were given topics on the theme to do research on and prepare for the debate last week.
