Five leading scientists from China’s National Institute of Parasitic Disease are in the country training locals in the diagnosis and elimination of malaria.
The two-week programme includes education on how to ensure accurate diagnosis of the disease so that Papua New Guineans can have access to early detection and treatment. The project is funded by the Australian government and the programme includes improving malaria diagnosis and research to inform and help malaria policy and programme decision-makers. Dr Evelyn Lavu, the Central Public Health Laboratory director, said: “We are grateful to the governments of Australia and China, as well as our own government for the opportunity provided by the trilateral malaria project to continue to build PNG’s skills in these critical scientific areas, and especially to learn from China’s hands on elimination experiences.” The National
