THE Papua New Guinea Paralympic Committee has called on provinces to bring young athletes to the PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain.
PNG Paralympic Committee executive Dr Kefu Ma said he wanted to see athletes between the ages of 13-16 competing at the national games in order for them to qualify for sports scholarships to China. “Provinces must realise that they have to send their best young talent to the PNG Games in order for us to consider them for scholarships in China,” Ma said. “We won’t consider any older athletes so it is in the province’s best interests to send young parathletes. “We can’t develop and train older ones because they are unlikely to be able to make the progress needed to be competitive on the world stage.” Ma, who was chef de mission for Team PNG at the Chinese Open Athletics Championships in Beijing last month where the three-member squad win two gold medals and a silver, said their hosts had offered long-term scholarships to talented young parathletes. Ma said with the PNG Games from November 26 to December 10 likely to attract a good number of athletes, he was reminding provincial selectors to focus on young parathletes. “Selectors must choose their best young talent for them to have a once-in-a-life-time chance to go to school and train in China free-of-charge for up to three years.” Ma, who was a former member of the Chinese Paralympic Committee, said the PNG body had formed a strong relationship with its Chinese counter-part and this would benefit many of the country’s parathletes. He said the Chinese national paralympic committee was willing to provide sports scholarships for four young PNG athletes to study and train with their athletes in preparation for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Ma said two Chinese parathletics coaches would attend the 2016 PNG Games to make the selections.
