CHILDFUND Papua New Guinea has successfully conducted a four-day training on the use of positive behaviour management for student-teacher relationships. It covers the use of helping and communication skills for responding to student wellbeing concerns. The training was conducted last week outside Port Moresby at Kokoda Trail Hotel.
It was facilitated by Dr Keren Shlezinger, an education expert from Youth Research Centre of the University of Melbourne, Australia in partnership with ChildFund PNG project team and a selection of regional guidance and counselling staff from the National Department of Education (NDOE). Participants included seven secondary schools from National Capital District and Central, officers from NDOE, Equal Playing Field, ChildFund PNG and Young Women Christian Association. They were trained on positive behaviour management to be able to support students with their wellbeing needs (including students who are experiencing violence at home and at school). Andrew Kimin, personal development teacher from Mainohano Catholic Secondary said the training had given him a new perspective to teaching the subject. “I am challenged to change my approach to students and the way I have been delivering PD lessons,” he said. “I now realise I have to transform students using positive behaviour management.” Phillip So’on, assistant secretary guidance and counselling Division from NDOE said: “We already have a behaviour management policy and this partnership with ChildFund through this training will enhance the department to implement this policy in the schools.”
