THE importance of books was emphasised and reemphasised when schools from Bulolo and Huon districts received reading books from Morobe Mining.
To “open your child’s imagination – open a book” was a sentiment heard by schools in the area repeatedly last month.
The books were donated from students and teachers of Sheldon College in Brisbane, Australia.
Thirteen cartons of books and stationery were delivered, along with 10 guitars and a carton of shirts, which were distributed to 14 elementary, five primary, three community, three high schools and one technical school.
Miriam Nep, head teacher for remote Kaisenik Elementary School of Winima near Wau township, thanked the college for donation, saying that the books would be most helpful for the children at the elementary stage.
She said they had a library and most of its shelves were empty and the donations were timely.
She shared the same sentiments with the other schools who expressed a need to have more books in their libraries to encourage students to read more and improve their English.
Grade 5 teacher at Kaisenik Primary School, Wano Yamu, was overjoyed with the donations.
“Thank you Sheldon College. On behalf of the school, teachers and the community, we really appreciate what they have done by giving us these books plus the guitars.
“These will help our children we will encourage them to read more and look after the books,” he said.
Yamu encouraged institutions to donate books to rural schools to help improve their learning.
Morobe Mining procurement manager Peter Vandermeer, who organised the donations with Sheldon College where his wife worked, said the board, staff and students were happy to make this an annual project. The National
