The assistance was channelled through the Australian High Commission's direct aid programme, a small grants scheme designed to support community-based projects across the country, and has gone toward purchasing and transporting building materials to refurbish the school's mess facility. Australian consul-general Brenton Kanowski said the investment reflected the importance placed on giving young people a solid start in life. "Australia is pleased to support infrastructure works at Siassi Lutheran Secondary School on Umboi Island through this grant," he said. "By improving essential school facilities, this project will help create a better environment for students to learn, grow and succeed."
Kanowski said Canberra valued its partnership with church-run education providers and communities throughout Morobe in efforts to support Papua New Guinean youth. School principal Wesley Kalipe said the upgrade would make a real difference for students studying in an isolated part of the province. "K223,000 has now been used for the mess refurbishment to be completed towards the end of the year and will be launched with the first grade 12 students' graduation," Kalipe said. He thanked the Australian government for its ongoing commitment to education, health and social development across Morobe and the wider country. The Australian High Commission noted that education continues to feature prominently in the broader PNG-Australia relationship, one that includes decades of cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG and its network of schools. headlines
