Australia and Yangoru Secondary School partner on major redevelopment

7/4/2018

Yangoru Secondary School will undergo a major redevelopment as part of the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership. Australia is providing K15.8m for the project, to support the school’s vision to become a regional centre of excellence.

Minister for National Planning and Monitoring, the Hon Richard Maru MP, Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Bruce Davis, and members of the Yangoru Secondary School administration officially launched the project today.

The significant infrastructure upgrade includes four new classrooms; a computing/design centre; two science laboratories; a resource centre/library; and four new dormitories, complemented by kitchen, dining and student amenities as well as four new staff houses, security lighting and fencing.

Minister Maru expressed his appreciation for the project stating that he is a strong supporter of the school’s vision.

“This redevelopment will greatly assist the school turn into a regional centre of excellence and will enrol top students from around the district as they enter the crucial academic years of 11 and 12,” Minister Maru said.

Mr Davis was also pleased to be supporting this project and commended the Minister and the school for their vision.

“I am proud to support this infrastructure redevelopment and the students that want to go on to access tertiary education. These new facilities can enable more students, including those from remote locations, to have access to quality education,” Mr Davis said.

“Education is transformative and through it will build the next generation of leaders for the district, province and Papua New Guinea.”

Design work has started and construction is expected to commence later in 2018.
