STARTING next year intakes for the Bomana police training outside Port Moresby will receive 18 months training, according to chief Instructor Erwin Maritua. Maritua said the 18-month programme had been approved by the Police Commissioner Gari Baki. He said the recruits would spend seven months in the college and the next 11 months on job training. “We have increased it to seven months. After the seven months would be 11 months in the divisional headquarters and that’s the time where they will have to complete what they call the CAP – the competency association programmes,” Maritua said. He said during their job training they would cover areas such as customer service, gender base and investigation, among others. He said some of the new courses included investigation, prosecution, public safety, traffic and some on the cross-cutting issues. “Most of the cross-cutting issues will be covered after they pass out from the Bomana Police College,” Maritua said. “When they pass out of the college after seven months, they will be posted to different regions and they work there for eleven months and that is where they get practical assignments on the job training. He said after eleven months they are confirmed as constables. Maritua said as the current recruits pass out of the Bomana Police College in December, the next intake would move in. He said the current training was also an 18-month programme, however it was six months on campus and one and a half years on the field.
