MORE than 100,000 students in Papua New Guinea do not have spaces to continue formal education, according to the director of Flexible Open and Distance Education (Fode) Benny Rayappan.
“Those students should be enrolled through Fode and if they are not then we have failed,” he told more than 100 Fode teachers and their 22 provincial coordinators who gathered in Port Moresby yesterday for a workshop on a new and aligned curriculum. “I go around the country and I see Fode students standing hours to get teaching materials from their centre. They are hungry for knowledge, don’t keep them waiting,” Rayappan said “You are the nerve centre of the system, so teach your students well and they will remember you.” He highlighted some of the challenges faced by Fode centres and teachers in PNG and encouraged them to continue to give a second chance to those who have not competed school. “I know some of you provincial coordinators are dealing with 2000 to 3000 students and that is too much for you. I want to see reports on a quarterly or monthly basis and budgets so that we can be able to identify your needs to help you help our students,” he said. The national
