WESTERN Highlands Governor Paias Wingti has urged principals and board of governors to draw up five-yea infrastructure development plan for their schools because of the misuse of school fees.
Wingti’s advice came during the partnership and first combine principals and board of governors meeting with him at the Mt Hagen Secondary School last Thursday. The event coincided with the opening of a double classroom. Wingti said he had taken an initiative to work in partnership with the MPs in the province to develop it. Anglimp-South Waghi MP Joe Koim and Wapenamanda MP Rimbink Pato attended the programme. “This is time for all of us to work in partnership to bring changes,” Wingti said. “For instance, if any school wants to build a classroom, the headmaster or principals of that particular school can get the ground work done before other stakeholders step in. “The school should find some money, the provincial and local level governments will chip in with some in order to develop the infrastructure projects.” Wingti urged the principals, headmasters and board of governors to use the school fees money wisely. He said the hand-out mentality practised by many should be stopped as it only led to corruption. Koim committed K50,000 to Mt Hagen Secondary for students’ computers. He said that education for students was important and schools needed to be fully equipped so that they could get quality education.
