Communities in the Bulolo District of Morobe province have captured the government’s vision to improve education in the country.
Together with local developer, the Morobe Mining Joint Venture, Pokwaluma Village in the Yanta LLG recently re-opened Wafi Primary School after 10 years of closure. The Wafi Primary school was closed for over a decade after teachers left as a result of transport difficulties. There is no proper road leading to the school. The only access there is by helicopter or via bush tracks. In June this year, rehabilitation work was carried out on the school’s infrastructure so that it could be opened to the local children. The work was a partnership between the local community, the provincial and district governments, and the Morobe Mining Joint Ventures. School Head Teacher Robin Boas said there are three teachers based at the school. He has encouraged children to attend. Yanta Development Association President Gelam Lautu, said for many years children in Yanta have not reached any tertiary level of education because accessing basic education has always been a problem. In the meantime, Personal Viability training was conducted in Nauti village in Bulolo. The training was expected to provide a holistic approach to improving a person’s physical, spiritual, mental and financial skills. The training has set a foundation for other trainings in financial literacy on how to make money, save and invest money in the community. Recent concerns regarding three villages in the Watut LLG and their shares in the Hidden Valley Mine Operations were also considered by participants during the trainings. Participant and community leader Maxwell Kipas expressed satisfaction that the training has taught him a lot with regards to managing royalty payments. The two week training was facilitated by Entrepreneurial Development Training Centre. Comments are closed.
