ALL teachers nationwide have been urged not to adopt strike or industrial action
but should continue to resort to dialogue and negotiation with the Teacher’s Service Commission and Department of Education if wage discrepancies were issues on the table for discussions. Chairman of the Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education and Wabag MP Robert Ganim made this call in a statement yesterday, saying that a strike action would undermine the ability of the PNG Teacher’s Association as the legitimate mouthpiece for the teachers, to negotiate better working conditions for them. "A strike would devastate the education of millions of school children nationwide and that is unfavorable to our nationhood," he said. Mr Ganim gives assurance that his committee has concluded the report following the nationwide investigation into teacher’s salaries and other entitlements. "Until the report is delivered to the parliament when it resumes on Aug 26, this year, I urge the PNGTA and the teachers nationwide to remain calm and patient," he said. He said he understands the plight of those teachers affected and agrees that their salaries and working conditions have been overlooked overtime.
