A FOURTH-year software engineering student specialising in cloud development at the University Technology has been invited by a New York based Information Technology Company as a product reviewer.
Travor Gankarch, 23, from Gabsonkec village, in Wampar, Morobe, is currently doing his on-the-job training with Papua New Guinea Power. Gankarch’s work involved conducting an investigation into PNG Powers service to host on cloud computing services during his six weeks training. Through his work, he was sent an invitation by IT Centre Station to be featured on their Cloud page and was asked to write more than 400-word review of his experiences with any cloud product of his choice. Cloud is essentially a metaphor for the internet and mostly refers to software, platforms and infrastructure that are sold “as a service”, that is remotely through the internet. Typically, the seller has actual energy-consuming servers which host products and services from a remote location, so end-users can simply log on to the network without installing anything. The major models of cloud computing service are known as software as a service, platform as a service, and infrastructure as a service. Gankarch said the news encouraged him to come out and encourage other university students that they too can do it. He said students can achieve what they want if they have the edge and the vision to achieve it. “In having a clear vision and the edge accompanied with passion would drive you to go that extra mile,” he said. He said universities only teach theory and it was a disadvantage for many students who have the knowledge as they could not fully achieve that required course expectation.
