UNIVERSITY of PNG’s Southern Highlands and Hela students handed in their weapons
to the security force after camping outside the security base for three nights due to tension following last week’s clash with another group of students. The students, who backed their council president Bobby Yupi not to strike, came to an agreement to make peace after they feared the closure of the academic year due to problems caused by recent political developments. The students gave in their bush knives voluntarily to Uniforce in front of students, student council members, security personnel and director of students services Garua Peni. Yupi said the weapons were only used for self defence and not to harm anyone in particular. “These weapons were taken to defend the university assets that were going to go into the hands of a rampage group, these weapons were taken to protect our own lives which were at stake, these weapons were taken to protect the president’s life,” Yupi said. He said his group only reacted to sources within the students’ body that they were going to be attacked. Yupi said the particular group who wanted to attack them had manufactured petrol bombs and he urged the security force at the school to seize them. Comments are closed.
