THE University of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare Library, in partnership with an Indian Company LIBSYS Ltd, introduced internet catalog for users to access internet when searching for books.
Librarian Semmy Ojuka said during the launching of the automated library management system (LIBSYS) and the E-Library on Thursday that this would help students to have access to adequate information for them to do research for their assignments and other academic stuffs. “This will help them save their time looking for books on the shelves in the library instead they will use the internet facility to write the author’s name and the title in the computer to see the general outline of the book and locate the exact location of the shelf.” She stressed that the library provided essential information services that students needed for academic and professional excellence. “UPNG has been criticised in the past by many for having outdated books, but the Information Technology system put in place today will boost our way forward,” she said. She thanked the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the students because upon their request, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill allocated K2 million to upgrade library facilities and Finance Minister James Marape organised funds for the upgrade of IT facilities. LIBSYS Ltd corporate manager Deepak Saxena said LIBSYS have served the global academic community for the past 25 years with a focus to deliver user friendly and technically sound solutions. Acting Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor for planning, Vincent Malaibe said information, communication and technology was a tool to do university business for the benefit of their students.
