A total of 161 students sponsored by the Morobe Provincial Government studying at the University of Papua New Guinea have been denied registration since Monday.
This is because the administration of the university refused to accept the guarantee letter sent in from the provincial headquarters in Lae. According to Noah Akuli, a student representative , 139 of these students are currently at the Waigani campus while 22 are at UPNG’s school of medicine and health sciences. He said the students could not register as the administration wanted actual payments done by the sponsor in regard to the payment of their tuiton fees. "They have tried their best to approach the Vice Chancellor, Professor Albert Mellam but the feedback is still negative and the registration will close on Friday,’’ Mr Akuli said. Morobe Governor Kelly Naru upon receiving their call met briefly with the students yesterday and said he would speak to the vice chancellor in relation to this. He said the Morobe Provincial Government and the students had been supportive to the university and they should make it easy for them. "They’ve got to understand how they do government business,’’ Mr Naru said. Over the past years, the Morobe Provincial Government, under the Gerson Solulu Scholarship Scheme, has been sponsoring students from all universities around the country, including some colleges. This is the first time the University of Papua New Guinea has refused to accept the guarantee letter and most of the students are stranded, living with relatives and friends around the city.
