STUDENTS returning to complete the second half of 2016 semester two and all students accepted for the 2017 academic programs at the country’s premier university will feel the full pinch of the government’s decision for the non- release of K12 million. This has forced the University council to set a new fee structure- fee hike set by the University council today. The new fee affects approximately 5000 students. Due to non- release of the government promised K12 million to the University of Papua New Guinea, the Council has released the burden to students to pay new set of fees. This will mean that new intakes in 2017, the second, third and final year students are subject to the new increased fees. Sadly, they pay the brunt due to government’s non commitment. The set of fees and deadline dates will be released next week alongside the 2017 acceptance list. Today, the UPNG Council deliberated for almost four hour meeting and decided not to close the second semester program but reached an option and that is the offload the financial burden to students. The university Chancellor Dr Nicholas Mann said today that the Council had deliberated on two options 1) to offload the fees to students and 2) close or abort the second semester, but option two was unlikely because the Council decided to bring back the students after the four month break but impose fees. He said that has been the decision despite numerous attempts and repeated calls to authorities including the finance department, department of higher education, research science and technology and the Prime Minister’s department to release the additional funding for the adjusted calendar. The adjusted calendar was for August 2016 to March 2017. Post Courier

The decision to complete the second semester is the best way ahead for the students. They have to complete the second part of the semester for extra knowledge. However, its a sad thing when parents are to pay the burden laid by the government. Its embarrassing to see the government denying the facts.
