CLASSES at the University of Goroka in Eastern Highlands Province are due to start this week after eight weeks of boycott. The resumption was made possible following a reconciliation and peace ceremony between the Upper highlands students and the Chimbu and Eastern Highlands students at the campus last Friday. Registration for the second semester starts today and will finish on Friday, while teaching practice students will be sent to their respective schools, also this week. All assessments for the first semester have been deferred; these include the final examination, micro-teaching and all assessable tasks. The University’s administration has revised the 2016 academic calendar to accommodate the eight weeks of classes which were disrupted by the students boycott. University of Goroka vice-chancellor Musawe Sinebare welcomed the students back and told them that the revised academic calendar is the last effort to save both the first and second semesters. Chancellor Joseph Sukwianomb said what happened has happened and that they must put aside their differences and move forward. The university’s council has put together an independent investigation team to find out how the fight started between the upper highlands students, which are the Hela, Southern Highlands, Enga, Western Highlands and Jiwika provinces and the Chimbu and Eastern Highlands students on June 14.
