A MAN who graduated with the highest grade point average in the Bachelor of Economics programme at the University of Papua New Guinea has dedicated his achievement to his grandmother.
Num Sipa Dama, from the Maina clan in the West Elimbari local level government in Chuave, Chimbu, was emotional when he mentioned his grandmother Dome Kai. “All achievements in life have their own stories to tell and for me, it’s not an easy journey to come this far,” he said. “But it’s always been the support and courage of my grandmother that gives me the strength and I thank God for having her in my life.” Dama said his grandmother looked after him when his parents left for Port Moresby. She got him through primary and high school education until he left Kerowagi Secondary School in Chimbu and was accepted at the University of Papua New Guinea. “Growing up with her was challenging and I sometimes felt like giving up school,” he said. “But she always saw what was hidden inside me and her sacrifice and encouragement has brought me this far.” On his achievement, he said he felt satisfied because he deserved it. “In life, it’s very important to set a clear and defined goal or dream, commit yourself to it. Nothing in life is impossible,” he said Dama said self-discipline and relying on divine blessing were important. “In everything we do, we must always acknowledge God and put God first in our lives,” he said. “Then, whatever dreams we have and when we commit ourselves towards it, we can achieve it in life.” Dama was an academic excellence scholarship student last year and was offered employment with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Ela Motors. He chose the latter. He is also looking forward to pursuing his post-graduate studies in future after gaining some experience. The National
