STUDENTS at the University of Technology in Lae have told the university management that they will only return to classes if Prime Minister Peter O’Neill responds to their petition. Acting vice-chancellor Dr Kaul Gena revealed this to The National in an email when giving an update on the boycott at the Taraka campus yesterday. Gena, the pro vice-chancellor (administration) is acting in place of vice-chancellor Dr Albert Schram who is overseas. He said management was told by the Student Representative Counci that they were still waiting for O’Neill to respond to their petition. “The management is having constant dialogue with the SRC to inform the students that our collective interest in completing the academic year is paramount to all other activities,” Gena said. “We want the students to return to class as soon as possible but we cannot force the students at this stage due to the pressure that is building up among the various student factions because of the national issues.” Gena said the SRC had facilitated a referendum to decide whether to return to class as per the SRC constitution.
