TWO Grade 12 school leaders have been given a second chance to attain tertiary qualifications as they undergo pilot training at the Townsville Aviation College. Emmanuel Haguma and Ben Frank Tating enrolled at the Asia Pacific Institute of Applied Social Economic and Technical Studies completed six months basic aviation training and have gone for practical training. Asia Pacific Institute director Thomas Pillar said the two would be there for 18 months to achieve their private pilot certificate and eventually a commercial pilot certificate. “I am determined and optimistic and have confidence in these two young men who would make this country proud,” Pillar said. He said practical training could be provided in PNG but due to requirements by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, most institutions were not eligible to offer training. “Government must improve on partnerships with private sector to see more Papua New Guineans being trained,” Pillar said. Haguma from Southern Highlands is jointly sponsored by APIASETS and the Townsville Aviation College while Tating from Western was sponsored under the Ok Tedi Development Foundation for K50,000 each covering all costs.
