A DISPUTE over the relocation of a school from one area to another in a remote part of Morobe has resulted in two deaths, police say.
Provincial police commander Supt Augustine Wampe told The National yesterday that a teenager and a 27-year-old man were shot dead during the clash just over a week ago. Wampe identified the deceased as Solomon Empivo Bonny, 19, from Giang village, and Piso Bonba, 27, from Gena in Pindiu in the Ube local level government of Finschhafen. Wampe said the incident happened on April 10 at about 11am near the Palai Memorial School. Wampe said Giang villagers wanted to transfer Grades 1-3 from the school to their village while the other grades remained at the school’s current location. This caused a heated argument resulting in a clash. “Two people are confirmed dead as a result of the fighting,” Wampe said. “They both died of pellet wounds after they were shot at. “The 19-year-old man was shot on his upper left shoulder while the 27-year-old man was shot in the head. “Both villagers were killed in Ube.” Wampe said the situation was tense so he was waiting for it to calm down before he would send a police team into the area to investigate. Last month villagers in the neighbouring Mindik village in the Burum-Kuat LLG slashed two brothers to death after accusing them of using sorcery to kill another man. Five suspects, all men, were rounded up by police and taken to Lae for questioning over the incident. The National
