TECHNICAL Vocational Education Training (TVET) is one area that can accommodate students who are unable to secure places in higher learning institutions after completing Grades 8, 10 and 12 in Papua New Guinea.
National Catholic Education Secretary Joseph Direkoro said “TVET education is one opportunity where it can accommodate those school leavers so that they can be trained to become useful in the societies.” Direkoro said this was one of the most serious discussion made during the technical vocational education training conference last Friday. “Every year we see the number of students increasing, only some pursue further with education in spaces available in higher learning institution or to Grades 10 and 12,” he said. “Many then resort to negative activities like involving in drugs and others, creating social problems. “TVET education will be useful to youths that is why we want government to put more focus.” He said the government can look at putting TVET schools in each districts, towns and provinces. “This is one area the youths can absorb and help themselves become reliable and productive later on in life,” he said. He said this is important in TVET education therefore it has been brought up for discussion.

It is true, man is created with skills as a tool required for survival. If the department of education can fully support skill development through the tvet run institutions all dropouts will have something more meaningful back to their communities than tons of problems
