THREE upcoming final-year PNG students at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) are now starting their practicum as on-the-job trainees in Cebu City, Philippines.
Frank Kepa, Daniel Darume, and Shayanne Peniai will be in their final year this upcoming June intake and will be graduating from university next year. A practicum is a supervised practical application of a concurrently studied theory which is referred to as work placement. In the Philippines, a practicum is a requirement for university students before they enter their final year. Students apply to business establishments and work according to their field of degree programme. Kepa, Darume, and Peniai are working as trainees at Paradise International Education Consultancy (PIEC), an organisation based in Cebu City which has placed students to universities, pilot training, and short courses. PIEC offers a wide range of services which include on-the-job training for students. It conducts training on professional portfolio and resume writing, and mock job interviews which help prepare students for the real job interviews after graduation. Kepa, 28, who graduated from Bishop Wade Secondary High School, in Bougainville, is currently taking up bachelor’s of science in business administration. “I am very happy right now that I am doing my practicum, my on-the-job training which is a school requirement for students. I am so excited as I draw closer to the end of my studies. It will be a beginning of another level for me,” Kepa said, who is working as a trainee in the administration department of PIEC. Darume, who is taking up a bachelor’s of science in management accounting, is working as an accounting trainee, while Peniai who is enrolled to bachelor of science in human resources and development management, works as a human resources trainee. They are three of the first batch of students who were subsidised by the Bougainville Executive Council and President John Momis in 2012. The students travelled overseas through the partnership of PIEC and Bougainville External Education Services. The sponsorship was made possible with the support of Nick Peniai who was the CEO of the Autonomous Bougainville Government Peace and Reconciliation Department that year.
