THREE Papua New Guineans have been granted scholarships to do their Master’s degrees in the United Kingdom.
The scholars have been supported by the British High Commission through its Chevening Scholarship of the British government and Steamships Trading Co as a funding partner. The three will undergo a 12-month master’s programme in universities. They are Dodi Doiwa, Austin Edo and Cathryn Buis. Doiwa and Edo are sponsored by Steamships and Buis by Chevening. The three received their certificate of recognition for the scholarships during a farewell ceremony in Port Moresby last week. Doiwa, of mixed parentage from Milne Bay, Northern and Jiwaka, will do a master’s in development at the University of Sussex and will be leaving this week. Edo, of mixed parentage from East New Britain and Northern, will study international maritime law at Swansea University in Wales and will be leaving this month. Buis, from Manus, is scheduled to do political economy of development at University of London and she left on Sunday. Buis, who works for the Australian High Commission as an acting programme manager for the governance programme, said: “The course will prepare me to help in the development of PNG, especially working with development partners and donor agencies.” “I am very grateful to the UK government through its high commission for making my study possible.” Deputy British High Commissioner Rebecca Brett: “We are looking at posting more students from PNG to study in UK universities and join the long tradition of education and academic research between our two countries. “This year we were looking at offering 10 scholarships within the South Pacific network.” Steamships Trading Co finance director Sean Pelling said: “We believe in the partnership with the British High Commission and the Chevening Scholarship philosophy of taking students into UK to experience what UK has to offer. “It will enable the scholars to be more aligned with a global view to do business and education within the PNG context.” Comments are closed.
