GOVERNMENT-sponsored students attending University of Papua New Guinea and University of Technology have been advised to collect their plane tickets from Air Niugini offices to return for classes. Secretary for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology David Kavanamur made the announcement last week. Professor Kavanamur also advised that funding for those tickets cost around K2.5 million has been drawn down from the department’s normal operational funding and with the airline company Air Niugini purposely for students under the tertiary education scholarship assistance or TESAS. The departments will also advice all international students under the bilateral scholarships agreements between the government of PNG and the governments of the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu that classes of University of PNG and University of Technology will resume soon at the end of this month and early next month. The department has advised that all bilateral students to make their own assessment on whether to return to classes. Those students are being advised to collect their tickets from Air Niugini. According to Prof Kavanamur, prior to the start of classes for University of Technology on August 29 and University of PNG on September 5, separate peace reconciliations will be held. "A process of reconciliation is being fostered with the two state universities to ensure that PNG’s collective national interest is secured and to ensure effective resumption of classes and the completion of academic year," he said. Recently, the new Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Francis Marus appealed to members of parliament to assist other students back for studies at the state universities.
