TEACHERS in East New Britain have been urged not to have affairs with their students. Rabaul MP Dr Allan Marat, addressing teachers in Rabaul, said “teachers should resist the temptation of having affairs with school children.” He said a teacher-student affair was unacceptable and should not be tolerated in the province. He called on teachers in the province not to consume alcohol within school premises. “Teachers should not be drunkards,” Marat said. “If a teacher is a drunkard, he or she must immediately resign and find employment elsewhere. “Teachers should not be drinking in school premises. “Education premises are not public bars where you can freely consume alcohol. “Students see you drink alcohol on school grounds and they learn the habit from you.” Marat reminded teachers that Papua New Guinea was a Christian country. “Your body is the temple of God’s Holy Spirit. “Therefore, honour God with your body and be a good example for students to follow,” he said. He told teachers that building a strong and positive relationship with students was to be guided by the country’s constitution and God’s Word. Marat said the national and provincial leaders have also failed their responsibilities. “I am tired of talking about attaining quality education like all other leaders. “Meanwhile, it is true that we leaders should take the lead in the implementation of policies. “It is also true that we do not live up to the expectations of all stakeholders. “Instead of us giving answers, we also do not have the answers,” he said.
