THE country needs teachers who are leaders to lead children in the right direction in this trying times, says an official.
Sr Mary McCarthy, the National Catholic Religious Education Coordinator, told the media during the Catholic Bishops Conference on Wednesday that “Rise in school violence” is a sign of “the devil at work”. “Teachers must remain vigilant at all times in school and be good examples to students,” McCarthy said. She took on the words of Pope Francis to be the guide for teachers who aspire to be leaders. It reads: “Shepherds need to be in front of their flocks to indicate the path, in the midst of the flock to keep them united, behind the flock to make sure none is left behind.” McCarthy said though teachers were the second teachers after parents, they were the implementers of ethical values in terms of spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual development of children. “The Catholic Education Agency aims to produce good quality young men and women of Christian values and principles who will contribute to the common good of everyone by showing the love of Jesus Christ,” she said. “To achieve that parents and teachers are the key partners in the healthy development of a child. “We want parents to teach their children values and teachers to guide them by showing good leadership quality.” McCarty said teachers should be good role models to students both inside and outside the classroom. She urged teachers to quit chewing betel nut, smoking, drinking alcohol and gambling. “Children copy parents and teachers so you have to show good attitudes and behaviour to them.”
