A PAPUA New Guinean surgeon launched a book on head and neck surgery during the 51st Medical Symposium in Port Moresby last week.
Launching the book titled The Colour Atlas of Head and Neck Surgery, author Dr Charles Paki Molumi, urged surgeons, medical officers and students to get a copy. He said the book was resourceful and could be handy to them. Dr Molumi, who is a head and neck surgeon, said the book was written purposely to suit PNG settings. “Despite criticisms that this publication may not be possible due to the fact that we have limited facilities and resources to help write this book, I’m pleased that we have published it. “I am proud to say that this book is recommended for surgical practices internationally.” Molumi thanked patients, who despite the situation they were in, gave permission for their pictures to be used in the book, thus he dedicated the book to them. “The pictures in the book are not what you see in live surgeries but give you a vivid understanding of the steps involved in an operation. “This book will be a useful tool when you (surgeons) are in the operation theatre. It’s very resourceful to medical students and doctors who want to understand the anatomy of the head and neck,” Molumi said. He said since there were not many ENT (ear, nose and throat) and head and neck surgeons in the country, the 12-chapter book could allow doctors in hospitals to do basic ENT and head and neck surgeries. Molumi thanked those who have helped, especially the board and management of Port Moresby General Hospital.
