Secretary of the Department of Personal Management (DPM), Mr John Kali was in Divine Word University’s (DWU) Madang campus last Wednesday 30th July and paid tuition and boarding fees for public servants studying under the Public Sector Workforce Development Program (PSWDP).
A total of K128, 150 was delivered to DWU for 25 public servants from various government agencies around the country who started classes at the university last week. They will be on campus for two weeks for the residential component before returning to their workplaces with assignments to do over the semester. Mr Kali confirmed that 13 officers enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration (MPAdmin) program and 12 enrolled in the Bachelor of Public Administration (BPAdmin) program. The two programs were developed by DWU and introduced in 2011 following the government’s request to the University to assist it to improve the public service workforce. This is the second batch of public servants studying under the PSWDP at DWU and Mr Kali said that the number continues to grow annually. Mr Kali told the public servants during the presentation that the purpose of PSWDP is to upgrade skills and knowledge of the public servants so they can serve the public better. “You are here to attend this program to upgrade your skills so that you can aspire to work better and be promoted”. “This has more to do with skills and competencies,” Mr Kali said. He said the government’s top priority is to deliver services to people thus the PSWDP is an investment worth spending money on. He told public servants, many of whom are district administrators and local level government executives that they were always at the frontline and in contact with the people thus whatever leadership qualities acquired in their study should be put to use to serve the people. Mr Kali encouraged the public servants to study hard in order to develop a positive working culture which they could bring back to the workforce and inspire others to serve the country better.
