THE Moresby North East electorate in the National Capital District has endorsed K1.2 million in fee subsidies for technical vocational education training (TVET) for students undertaking courses in 2016. The announcement was made by the local MP and Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS, Michael Malabag. “We aim to enhance the quality of learning for these students through this institution and to further ensure they have the qualification to a brighter and prosperous future,” he said. Yesterday Malabag presented 29 TVET institutions with cheques as part of his ongoing support since the inception of the programme in 2013. He said a total of 557 students attending TVET institutions would be sponsored this year. Malabag said since the sponsorship commitment, statistics have shown that 3,962 school dropouts had received support and were able to complete their training. “Statistics show that 38 teachers and 563 tertiary students are now aiming to complete their diploma and bachelor degree courses.” Malabag said the Government was vocal about education with the tuition fee-free (TFF) education in place but the increase in the student-teacher ratio due to TFF indicated that investment was needed. Primary and secondary schools within Malabag’s electorate, have received double classrooms as part of the vision to invest more in education in the country. “Education is a vehicle for change and requires a holistic approach from parents, teachers, and the Government. “In order for this beautiful country to prosper into the 21st century we need highly skilled and educated elites that can embark on what this government envisions,” Malabag said.
