MORE than 300 students at Brahman High School in Usino-Bundi, Madang, are suffering from typhoid as a result of poor sanitation triggered by the current dry conditions.
The students are confined in school undergoing treatment for the contagious disease to minimise the risk of the disease spreading. Provincial education adviser Moses Sariki and health adviser Marcus Kachau dispatched a medical team to assess the situation and provide treatment last Monday. “The Brahman typhoid case is under control and infected students will remain in school currently undergoing treatment instead of being sent home,” Sariki said. Deputy acting provincial administrator Peter Torot, Kachau and Sariki accompanied Usino-Bundi MP Anthony Yagama to Brahman on Saturday to check the situation and decide the next course of action. Kachau said that prevention and treatment were crucial if people experienced symptoms of typhoid. Meanwhile, Sariki was critical over limited space in secondary and high schools to cater for an increased number of students. “Madang has only nine secondary and high schools. “The number of students completing Grade 8 each year, coupled with rundown facilities in many schools, are giving us a lot of problems,” he said. “This is truly a sad situation for the future of Madang due to limited capacity of facilities. Therefore, respective MPs and district administration need to be mindful to take initiatives today to build new secondary and high schools to invest in developing future human resources.” Sariki received K400,000 to improve the capacity of dormitories at Brahman High.
