‘A STUDENT has been jailed for 12 months for being in the possession of drugs in Buka.
Buka District Court Magistrate Bruce Tasikul found Augustine Tologina, 19, guilty of marijuana possession. The court heard that a police patrol unit on Dec 23 came across a truck returning home overloaded with passengers. Police stopped the vehicle and reminded the passengers to be mindful of their safety. Police also checked the passengers and their cargo and found a bundle of marijuana in Tologina’s bag. He told police that the drugs belonged to his friend. Both were taken to the police station and charged separately. Tologina told the court that he was attending the Koromira Technical High School in Kieta, Central Bougainville. But Tasikul told him “the large quantity of drugs found in your bag portrays that you were taking the drugs to your village for sale.” “Some youths these days are very lazy and do not till their land to make an honest living through cocoa and copra. “They turn to illegal means and find easy ways to make quick money through the sale of marijuana and home brew,” he said. “You say you plan to return to school this year but if you were concerned about going back to school, you should have avoided such illegal activities.” Tasikul said heavy penalties should be imposed to deter other young people from committing such crime, and concentrate on their education.
