CLASSES at the Bugandi Secondary School in Lae have been suspended indefinitely following a fight between two cult groups. The situation was compounded when other students, frustrated with the activities of the two groups, attacked their members. Morobe secondary schools standards officer Gibson Dom, who went to the school to calm the situation, was also attacked. Dom said classes had been suspended for an indefinite period from mid-day yesterday and students were told to go home. “On being alerted about the fight, I went to the school and try to help stop the fight. Instead, the two factions hurled stones and missiles at each other, their teachers and me,” Dom said. According to students who requested anonymity, the fight was a continuation of a row between the two groups last year which resulted in an injury to Grade 12 student Benjamin Zasu from Maiama village, Morobe post. The fight resumed on Wednesday in the school ground. They were chased out and continued the fight outside. Yesterday, the fight erupted again with other students fed up with the two groups joined in. It could not be confirmed if any student was injured. Dom said the violence was the worst ever this year at Bugandi. “This student fight is the worst because students used weapons to attack each other for about 30 minutes. Luckily no casualty has been reported,” Dom said. While only a minority of students were involved, he said the school had to be closed for the safety of the majority of students and teachers. He advised parents to spend time talking to their children. The National
