The standard of education in Manus has become a concern as less number of Grade 12 students get accepted into tertiary institutions in the country.
People and education has been the main resource for the province. However, this has proven otherwise in recent years, and worst last year when no Grade 12 students from the province made it into any of the universities in the country. A local confirmed the top student from Manus Secondary School got accepted into the National Polytech Institute in Lae, Morobe. Educationist Ben Wamoi says teachers’ laziness, leadership incompetency and corrupt administration are some reasons behind the drop in education standard in Manus. Wamoi, who has 12 years of teaching experience, says “the 2013 Grade 12 external examination results are the worst in the 14-year history since secondary education was introduced in our province.” He says those who are paid to ensure that the education system operates functionally to deliver intended outcomes are enjoying perks and privileges and do not feel any moral guilt over the declining education standard and the “pathetic” Grade12 external examination results. Manus Open Member Ronny Knight says the decline and problem lies with parents, teachers, students and facilities of institutions in the province. “Our only cash crop is our brains; you will see some of our students have decent GPA but are not awarded government scholarships. How is it a student from another province with lower GPA gets preference? We need a university or technical institute in Manus,” says Knight. He says poor guidance is being offered by teachers leading to students not having a better chance of being selected. Local business women representative Mary Pohei says part of the problem also lies with the student’s attitude towards studies as a lot of them are involved in drinking and socialising. “The teachers cannot really do anything because if they try to correct the students, they go home and bring their relatives who attack the teaching stuff,” says Pohei.
