THE Standard-Based Curriculum (SBC) is not new, but written based on the Outcomes-Based Curriculum, according to curriculum official.
Director for curriculum and assessment Steven Tandale said that the curriculum and assessment officers review, align, realign and reposition the Outcomes Statements in Outcomes-Based Curriculum into standards statements forthe Standards-Based Curriculum. Tandale said the SBC is written based on the Outcomes-based Syllabus outcomes that they already have and are used currently by teachers to plan and teach. “We are aligning, realigning and repositioning the Outcomes Statements to Standards statements and setting bench marks that students will be achieving at each grade level,” he said. The Standard based curriculum is developed through the: Existing National Curriculum Statement (NCS); working within other related curriculum policy documents such as curriculum management plan; curriculum Writers handbook, and Curriculum development handbook; and, National Assessment and Reporting Policy, (NARP) and other related documents to develop curriculum. He said the SBC was to blend curriculum and other important information from the content of OBC, while the framework for the New Standards based Syllabus has been developed concurrently. “Polices on SBC came as result of the National Government establishing a OBC taskforce, aimed at investigating and recommendation to the Government for an appropriate Curriculum to be developed,” he said. The development of SBC started in 2013 and continued this year and all elementary syllabus and teacher guides will be in 2015 followed by English, Math’s and Science for Primary, while other subjects will be written in 2015 to be implemented in 2016.
