More than 130 abstracts will be presented at the 6th Research, Science and Technology Conference next month at the University of Papua New Guinea.
The conference secretariat has confirmed receiving the abstracts both from within the country and abroad. More than 500 people are anticipated to attend the conference on November 17 to 21 at Waigani Campus in Port Moresby. Presentations will include contributions on science and engineering to sustainable development, role of businesses and industry as well as that of private sector and NGOs and others. Participants would represent several categories of stakeholders from academia, policy makers, industries, businesses, research institutions, NGOs and other sectors. The Chairman of the conference and organizing committee Professor Chalapan Kalauwin said the preparations are well underway. “We are excited with the overwhelming response shown in the number of abstracts received so far. “However sadly, we have to stick to our closing date and be unable to accommodate every abstract received due to time allocated for each presenter or author of the abstracts,” he stated. Professor Kaluwin said despite this, the committee is working around the clock to fit everyone into the program. The Governments Responsible Sustainable Development Frame work is guided by four themes which is Quality of Life-Social Pillars or Principles, Environment Pillars or Principles, Economic Pillars or Principles and Governance Pillars or principles. Presenters will align or capture their papers within these four guiding pillars that are also in line with the government’s vision 2050. Meanwhile, a new Bachelor of Sustainable Development Degree and Diploma in Comprehensive Hazard and risk management program will be launched at the end of the conference. “This is a new program that the University will run in 2015 which also has the University’s full backing and funding,” Professor Kaluwin said. The conference will be jointly organized by the University and the National Research Science and Technology Secretariat. The theme of the conference is ‘promoting responsible and sustainable development through science and technology’. The objective of the conference is to achieve an outcome that supports the unfolding and implementation of the Five PNG National Goals and Directive Principles stipulated in the Constitution. Also it aims to roll out and expedite the Vision 2050 outcomes throughout the country and its partners and to understand and support the implementation of the Development Strategic Plan 2010-2030 throughout the country. And to further contribute to the implementations of medium term development plan 2011-2015 which also adds to the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development work.
