SCHOOLS that are prone to disasters now have essential materials provided by the Education Department and UNICEF.
The kits comprising of tents, teaching materials and early childhood development kits in disaster-proof metal boxes and emergency family kits would be in all 22 province by next year. The department and UNICEF partnered Post PNG Ltd in delivering the non-food items to 13 provinces in 2013, and yesterday, it embarked on delivering the same to the remaining nine provinces. The items will seek to address disturbances to the children’s learning during unlikely events of disasters. UNICEF country representative Ben Baba said the organisation was pleased to deliver basic resources to remote areas, especially for the children. Baba said UNICEF was supporting the department in its efforts to reach schools and students that were vulnerable. Education Secretary Dr Michael Tapo said the kits would be given to schools in the remote areas of the provinces. “These materials will be given to our children in the remote areas. We are rolling our commodity component and the materials could be given with the components to schools,” he said. Tapo urged nine provinces that would be receiving the materials to not lock away the materials in containers but have them delivered to children. He added that two provinces had not issued the materials to schools and they would be receiving letters from his office soon. The nine provinces which would receive their kits by next February are Central, Milne Bay, NCD, Enga, Jiwaka, Western, Hela, Southern Highlands and Gulf. Comments are closed.
