EDUCATION acting secretary Dr Uke Kombra says schools should not be threatening to shut down over delays in receiving their tuition fees.
He said yesterday that the first lot of tuition fees for the third quarter for the year was released to commercial banks two weeks ago. The secretary said schools should have funds in their bank accounts for their operations. He also said self-proclaimed educationists should not give false reports to the public that schools have not received funds. He said this in light of claims by an educationist in Morobe Province that schools are sending students home because they (schools) have no not received the Government’s tuition fees. Papua New Guinea Teachers’ Association Morobe branch president Mark Nanu claimed there was pressure exerted on teachers by angry parents and stakeholders after children have been sent home due to food shortage at boarding schools. Yesterday, the Post-Courier confirmed that some of the schools affected were Bugandi and Lae secondary schools and St Paul’s and Markham Road primary schools in the past weeks. It was also confirmed that few students have returned to school this week. Meanwhile, Kombra confirmed that preparations are done for the balance payment of K53 million, which will be released for term three tuition fees. The secretary was apologetic over the slow release of tuition fee but he assured that schools will eventually receive their funds. Source: Post Courier
