SAINT Xavier’s Secondary School on Kairiru Island in Wewak, East Sepik, has been closed for almost three weeks due to funding shortages, Wewak Islands local level government president Pius Bugatar says.
“There is no money to buy food for the boarding students. Students struggle to survive on fish they catch in the sea and dry coconut,” Bugatar said. “I am calling on the provincial education board to send their standard officers to go in and investigate the situation.” Bugatar said as a result of limited funding, the school could not provide enough food for students and the board decided to close it. “I suggest that next year the school should restrict enrolments to island LLG students only, in that way funds may be enough.” East Sepik provincial education adviser Pius Munkaje said he had been informed by the St Xavier’s headmaster that the tuition fee-free money they received was not enough to cater for students the school has. “It is a matter of urgency that the school has been partly closed and students have not been attending school since their term one break,” Munkaje said. He said that some students who returned after the school holiday were sent back home as a result of food shortage. He said the TFF funds the school received from the Education Department was not enough and the board decided to close the school. The National

As a ex student, the problem there I think it is not the shortage of money. Can ESP Ed. dept check the head of school properly with funding and expense record in their files( do Authid). There is a mismanagement and stealing going on. Since David Aram Administration, regardless of small amount of money given to school but he able to manage it properly until the whole year end
