MORE than 10,000 students pass out from secondary schools around the country each year, but only a few thousand make it through tertiary institutions.
“Where do the rest go” is a statement made independently by three different private school owners in Port Moresby at different times this year – John Rumints from PNG Education Development Services Secondary School at Boroko, Rai Gini director of PNG Life Education Institute at Waigani and Max Kuri principal of Kumul Training Institute at Waigani. Kuri made the statement twice at different occasions - first when he officiated during his students’ graduation last month and during a graduation two weeks ago. “Without private training providers, how can the Government accommodate those who drop out from Grade 10 or 12?” Kuri asked during the recent graduation. He made his stance stronger and won empathy when he mentioned that private institutions like KTI were the government’s “ancillary agencies” in building human resources. “Government draws up big policies but is slow in implementing it and we (private schools) step in to help in areas where the government cannot help. We are the government’s hands and feet,” Kuri said.
